JAPN 302: History of Japan
Course Description:
This course further develops advanced level Japanese through building and expanding knowledge of Japanese history as a dynamic, interrelated system and employs a variety of processes to identify, analyze and evaluate cultural themes, values and ideas. Students will demonstrate ability to accurately comprehend ideas across a range of historical content. Taught in Japanese.

MLO 1&2: Language and Culture Courses taught in Japanese
Course Narrative
In the course JAPN 302, the class delved into the history of Japan through the use of a target language textbook, Intermediate Reader: Japanese History And Culture. The classes used varies assignments from the textbook such as writing assignments, comprehension reading questions, and quizzes. The use of the assignments was to reiterate the text reading. The class also delved into many group and class discussions on the reading. The final class assessment was a presentation on a particular reading from the text.
This course satisfied the Major Learning Outcomes (MLO) 1&2: Japanese Language and Communication, Japanese Culture. This course was taught using only Japanese and required all students to speak mainly in the target language in all class and group discussions. The text required and used was a target language book and all assignments were completed in Japanese. Because of this extensive use of Japanese, I believe my proficiency improved a little. This course also satisfied the culture portion of the MLO, as the course discussed the history of Japan from the Heian period, until modern era. The course covered all manner of topics including the creation and use of haiku's and wood block paintings.
