LESCANT Photos
What is LESCANT?
LESCANT stands for Language, Environment, Social Organization, Context, Authority, Non-Verbal, and Time. This is a compilation of all the LESCANT related pictures that I took while studying abroad in Japan. In the following section is pictures from Japan, which LESCANT I classified it as, a description of what the picture is, and a small explanation why I classified it as such.
Non-Verbal
This picture was taken in Kyoto at a small tea house where the owners teach the basics of a traditional tea ceremony. I chose this photo as Non-Verbal as many of the steps have meanings that are not talked about. There are also many steps that the audience must also be aware of and follow orders when viewing a ceremony. For example upon entering the small tatami room, a the members should turn to the alcove with the small scroll or artwork and appreciate it before going to their seats.

Environment/Time
This picture was taken by the Asahi River in Okayama City during the summer. When using fireworks it is best to go by the river so that the hazard of a fire is less likely and you have access to water, which is why I chose this as an Environment photo. Fireworks also seem to appear out of thin air during the summer season in all the shops, which is why I think it represents Time. Ours we bought at Daiso, as we did not have a lot of money to purchase the better quality ones. However they were just as much fun and a great way to bond with friends.

Environment/Time
This picture was taken outside my dormitory near Tsushima campus in Okayama. I chose this as an Environment photo as there were multiple rice patty fields on our campus for research purposes and to feed the students. Okayama Prefecture is also known for being a great place for agriculture. I also believe this represents Time since everyday I passed these fields and saw them change and reflect the seasons throughout my study abroad experience.

Context
This picture was taken on a field trip to a tatami beri (ribbon around a tatami mat) factory. This factory is constantly trying to come up with new designs and products to keep up the traditional making of tatami beri. One of those products is a whale shark coin purse. When I saw these I thought they were very cute, however they were the only animal products and I did not know why they chose a whale shark of all animals. I was then told that the factory had chosen the whale shark as their mascot, but as there were no clear signs anywhere else of their mascot I had to be told the Context of the product.

Social Organization
This picture was taken at Okayama University during a Halloween party. This party was thrown by the Language Cafe, where I obtained a job teaching English, and had games, picture booths, food and drinks. I chose this picture for Social Organization as it was organized by L-Cafe and hosted all studetns from international students to Japanese.

Authority/Language
This picture was taken in Osaka at Universal Studios. This was the first ride we went on and were surprised to be handed these cards by the workers. It explained the hazards of the ride and things that were prohibited on the ride, like sunglasses that could fall off during the ride. I chose this picture as it shows Authority of the rules to be followed, as well as Language since they were prepared with these informational cards in different languages for foreigners.

Language
This was taken at Okayama Station before my first big holiday trip. The picture is of a sign designating which trains are running and where they are heading towards. I chose this as Language as I had to become quick in reading and understanding all the train signs during my travels. Glad to say I became "fluent' in transportation language by the end of my studying abroad.

Context/Non-verbal
This was taken during a field trip to Yakage, a small village in Okayama Prefecture. After our day of adventure we went to an onsen (bath house) in the small village. We were nervous as it was our first experience in an onsen. We were told that the hiragana on the outside was a clear designation that it was an onsen. This was very interesting as I had never heard this before, but I kept my eye out for these symbols during the rest of my travels.
